Butch Deveraux Custom Knives

Every aspect of my knives are made freehand,  meaning that I don't use any jigs or patterns, which makes every one of my knives a unique and one of a kind piece.

What Makes My Knives Special

The blade:

My blades are forged from 2" or 3" round stock 52100 carbon steel using low temp forging and then heat treated using the methods that Ed has created and many of us have worked on to make better, stronger knives.
Every blade I make is tested for toughness and edge retention before being assembled into a finished knife. Randomly I will test a blade to destruction just to make sure I am doing things right. Most of my blades have an extended, rounded ricasso in front of the guard to allow for choking up on the knife for better control by placing one finger ahead of the guard while performing more delicate tasks.

The guard:

Most of my guards are Brass and of sufficient size to offer the best protection against slipping up over the blade during hard use. I am a firm believer that a good guard is a must on any field knife as I have seen the aftermath of someone trying to use a knife without a guard or an insufficient guard with disastrous results to the user.
I also use Silica Bronze and Nickel silver on occasion.

The scabbard:

My scabbards are made from 8-12 oz waxed harness leather and hand laced. With the exception of my large Bowie knives and fighters
I make a pouch type sheath that holds the knife firmly in place.
